As you get started on your videography journey, don't stress out about equipment. Audio engineers and videographers are famously obsessive about recording gear and often use the latest and greatest. For the purposes of StudioMAX videography, or videos to be posted to social media or YouTube, a simple cell phone kit will work very well! Here are links to gear we recommend for cell phone video recording:
- An external mic with a windscreen
- A tripod
- A cell phone stabilizer with a light attachment
- If you want to get a little more advanced with it, a gimbal
Videography tips to get you started:
As you start taking video, you'll develop your own preferences depending on what you're doing. To get started, keep the camera horizontal and steady with your head and shoulders in the frame. It helps to use a tripod or have someone else hold the camera.
Note that horizontal video can be made vertical, but vertical video can't be made horizontal. So, shoot horizontal first!
We recommend always using an external microphone and windshield for best sound quality.
- To set up the equipment listed in our recommended kit, plug in the patch cable to your phone and the end of the mic, and attach the microphone to the smartphone rig.
- The mic will attach to phone rig. Test your mic before filming to ensure it is connected properly. Always aim mic at the person speaking.
